Triathlon Race Calendar Netherlands 2026 —The Complete Guide
The Netherlands is one of the best countries in Europe to race triathlon. The courses are mostly flat and fast, the organisation at major events is excellent, the cycling culture means drivers respect you on the road, and the race calendar runs from May all the way through to October.
Whether you're planning your first sprint triathlon or targeting a full Ironman, this is your complete overview of the events to know in 2026 — with coaching notes on each one.
Sprint & Olympic Distance — Perfect for Beginners and Returnees
• DTS Zandvoort (Olympic): One of the most popular and well-organised Olympic distance triathlons in the Netherlands. Sea swim, fast bike, flat run through the dunes. Typically held in June. Great first Olympic distance race.
• Amsterdam Triathlon (Sprint + Olympic): Held in the heart of Amsterdam. Canal swim, city centre bike, iconic run. Multiple distances available. Excellent atmosphere. Ideal for athletes based in or near Amsterdam.
• Rotterdam Triathlon: Popular city race with a strong local following. Well-suited to time-crunched athletes who want a competitive field without travelling far.
Half Distance (70.3) — The Sweet Spot
• Challenge Almere-Amsterdam: Long-established race that also includes half and full distance options. Great organisation, strong community event.
Ironman 70.3 Westfriesland: The flagship 70.3 in the Netherlands and the race I've completed twice. Held in late June / early July. Competitive, well-organised, stunning North Holland setting. If you're targeting one 70.3 in the Netherlands, this is the one.
Full Distance — For Those Ready to Go All In
• Challenge Almere: The main full-distance triathlon in the Netherlands. Flat and fast, perfect for a first full iron-distance finish or a time-focused performance race.
Note: Always verify current year registration status at ironman.com and challengefamily.com — race calendars change annually.
International Options Within Easy Reach
• Ironman Hamburg: Short flight or long drive. One of Europe's most popular full Ironman events. Flat and fast. Popular with Dutch athletes.
• Ironman Copenhagen: This is the race I completed in 2025 in 11:58:25. Stunning course, excellent organisation. Highly recommended for a first full Ironman abroad.
• Challenge Roth: The gold standard of age group triathlon in Europe. Ballot entry — apply early. Extraordinary atmosphere and community.
How to Build Your Season Around These Races
The best seasons are built around 1–3 A races — events you target your peak performance for — with B and C races used as preparation and progress checks. A typical Dutch season might look like:
• May — C Race: DTS Zandvoort Sprint. Test fitness, practise transitions, shake off winter rust. No pressure.
• July — B Race: Ironman 70.3 Westfriesland. Race with intent but not fully peaked. Use as a fitness marker.
• September — A Race: Challenge Almere or Amsterdam. Full peak performance. This is what the season builds to.
Starting this planning process in January (or ideally late autumn) gives your coach time to design the periodisation properly. Entering races in April and asking a coach to reverse-engineer a plan is much harder.
For Expats and English-Speaking Athletes in the Netherlands
All major Dutch races are welcoming to international athletes. Race briefings at Ironman 70.3 Westfriesland are in Dutch and English. Most race websites have English versions.
If you're an expat who wants to race in the Netherlands and needs a coach who works entirely in English — with personal knowledge of the Dutch race calendar, courses, and logistics — that's exactly what Peak Within Coaching offers.
Important Registration Notes
• Register for your A race first, even before you have a training plan. The entry confirmation is what makes the goal real.
• Check triathlon.nl for the comprehensive Dutch race calendar updated regularly.
• Join the Dutch triathlon community on Facebook and Strava — race registration announcements often go out there first.
• Popular events fill fast. Ironman 70.3 Westfriesland and Challenge Almere both sell out months in advance.
